From Why and When to How - We Answer It All!

Do I need to Overseed?

If you have a fescue lawn in the Raleigh–Fuquay–Holly Springs area, the answer is almost always yes.

Fescue is a cool-season grass that naturally thins every summer because of heat, humidity, drought stress, disease (brown patch), and foot traffic.

Overseeding is recommended every Fall.

Signs you need to overseed:

  • Thin or patchy areas

  • Bare spots where soil is visible

  • Uneven in color or density

  • Summer brown patch damage

  • Weeds spreading from lack of coverage

  • Weak appearance and slow growth

  • The lawn has not been overseeded in over 12 months.

How is Overseeding done?

Overseeding is done by spreading new fescue seed across your existing lawn to fill thin areas, repair summer damage, and increase thickness. Before applying seed, we recommend the lawn be mowed short and cleared of debris so the seed can have better contact with the soil. After seeding, the lawn will need to be watered consistently to help the new seedlings germinate and establish.

Overseeding pairs very well with core aeration, because the holes created when aerating form pockets for seed-to-soil contact and encourages strong root development.
